Slate Tile Cleaning

What is Slate?

Slate is a dense, yet soft and easily scratched metamorphic rock made primarily of mica and quartz. It can be found in a range of colors including grey, black, red and purple, and has a unique uneven surface with cleft planes. To protect it from staining and wear, it is recommended to seal it with an oil-repellent sealer. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Cleaning Slate Floors

Cleaning slate tiles can be challenging due to the many types of slate and the use of different sealing products. The cleaning process can vary depending on the type of slate and it is important to test the surface before cleaning to determine the type of sealer used and ensure that the cleaning product will not cause damage or discoloration. Alkaline cleaning products are typically safe for use on slate, however, using acidic cleaning products may potentially harm the surface of the tile.

If the slate tiles have a visible sealer, it must be removed before cleaning can commence. It is also beneficial to identify the type of sealer or wax used in order to select the appropriate stripping product. Due to the uneven surface of slate, it is important to avoid using high pressure during cleaning, especially when the grout is in poor condition.

Sealing Slate Tiles

Natural slate tiles have a dense yet porous surface, which can be easily tested by observing how a drop of water is absorbed. As the slate can sometimes appear dull, sealants can be used to enhance its color and create a glossy finish. Applying a sealant to the slate will protect it from stains and chemical damage, preserving your investment. Sealing is a crucial step in maintaining the appearance and integrity of your slate tiles.

Two main sealing options exist for slate tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer

(Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer

(Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer uses nano-technology to create a breathable protective barrier on slate and grout, protecting them from water and oil-based stains. This type of sealer makes cleaning and maintenance of the slate surface and grout much easier. Tile and Stone Cleaners® are experts in applying all types of sealers, ensuring that your slate looks its best. They can also apply a topical sealer in situations where a high gloss, satin sheen, or matte finish is desired or when the old solvent-based sealer cannot be completely removed or hide certain types of damage. Topical sealers have a lifespan of about 3 years.

Types of sealers used on slate tiles

It is crucial to thoroughly clean the tiles before applying a sealant to ensure the best possible appearance of the tile and prevent dirt, stains, or other debris from being trapped under the sealant.

To safeguard your slate from oil and water-based stains, maintain its appearance, and prevent moisture damage, it is advisable to use a high-quality, invisible, and fully breathable impregnating sealer. This type of sealer will provide the best protection for your slate and grout and will maintain the slip resistance of the tile.

Slate Floors Maintenance

Proper maintenance is crucial to preserving slate tile. While slate is resistant to acid because of its lack of calcite, it can still be susceptible to damage if it is highly porous. Applying a high-quality, penetrating sealer is essential in these cases. After cleaning the slate tiles, you may find that the grout is still not as clean as desired. In this case, additional scrubbing of the grout lines with a scrub pad may be necessary. It is important to test the cleaner on a small area of the slate first to ensure it does not damage or discolor the tile surface.
