Terracotta Tile Cleaning

Terracotta floors, when cared for properly, can be beautiful, durable, resistant to stains, and easy to maintain.

What is Terracotta?

Terracotta, meaning “baked earth”, is a type of ceramic material that has been utilized in construction and decorative arts for centuries in various cultures globally. It’s made from natural clay and has a distinct reddish-brown color that can vary based on the type of clay used. Terracotta tiles are known for their “old-world” appearance, often associated with Southwestern, Mediterranean, or rustic styles.

Terracotta is a versatile material that can be used both indoors and outdoors due to its durability and aesthetic appeal. Its unique appearance is difficult to replicate, and when sealed, it offers added protection against stains, moisture, and scratches. Additionally, terracotta flooring is warmer compared to other ceramic materials, making it more comfortable to walk on.

Do Terracotta tiles need to be sealed?

While terracotta tile floors can be left untreated when used indoors, they are usually sealed with a top coat. While some terracotta tiles are marketed as waterproof, all raw clay tiles are highly absorbent and can stain easily. To protect against this, Tile and Stone Cleaners® recommend sealing your terracotta surfaces with a deep-penetrating, impregnating sealer. Terracotta may come pre-finished or require the application of various sealers or coatings on site to provide a durable surface. Without proper sealing and installation on a waterproof layer, terracotta may crumble or show wear quickly. Additionally, terracotta should not be installed in high-traffic areas and should never be cleaned at pressures above 1100 PSI, and only if the grout is in good condition.

Sealing Terracotta Tiles

Terracotta tiles are visually appealing, and provide a casual, rustic atmosphere to residential floors. As a raw material, it is essential that it is sealed after installation. To ensure proper sealing, it’s recommended to hire a professional tile cleaner with expertise in the different types of sealers available and how to apply them. We offer comprehensive terracotta cleaning and sealing services for both commercial and residential properties.

Two main sealing options exist for terracotta tiles

Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer

(Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

Topical Sealer

(Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)

A premium impregnating sealer protects terracotta and grout from water and oil-based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology to create a breathable protective barrier. This type of sealer protects the terracotta surface and grout from absorbing stains and makes cleaning and maintenance much easier. A premium impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of the terracotta and once cured, it will not change the look of the tile. A premium colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the appearance of terracotta surfaces.

Tile and Stone Cleaners® are experts in applying all types of sealers and will ensure that your terracotta looks its best. Our experienced technicians can apply a topical sealer when necessary to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish on your surfaces. Topical sealers can be helpful in situations where the old solvent-based sealer cannot be completely removed or to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealers have a lifespan of around 3 years.

You can easily test the porosity of your terracotta by applying a drop of water to the surface and observing how the water is absorbed by the terracotta. This will give you an idea of how any type of water-based stain can be absorbed by the terracotta tile surface and grout.

Stripping & Sealing Terracotta Tiles

In most cases, we can chemically remove the existing floor finish and treat any stains and marks that have occurred due to an ineffective current floor seal. Our technicians will work to achieve the best possible results, often by returning the terracotta to its natural state. Once we are satisfied with the results, we allow for sufficient drying time before applying 2-4 coats of our specialized terracotta floor tile seal.

Terracotta Tile Restoration

Tile and Stone Cleaners® technicians are experienced in restoring and revitalizing neglected terracotta flooring. With years of experience, they can often achieve remarkable results even on the most heavily damaged terracotta. The only effective way to restore terracotta is by returning it to its natural state, allowing it to dry, and then sealing it with 2-4 coats of impregnating penetrating sealer and applying a surface coating finish. This process ensures a long-lasting and stain-proof finish for your terracotta. You can rely on our expertise, professionalism, and experience to provide the highest level of satisfaction with the condition of your terracotta floor.

They also have all the necessary treatments, agitation tools, and chemical solutions to safely and effectively remove efflorescence deposits both internally and externally.
